Balance and Falls Prevention on the Sunshine Coast

Build confidence in your everyday movement with balance and falls prevention programs tailored by physiotherapist Scott Baines. Assessment and guided exercises focus on your balance, strength and ability to move safely at home and in the community.

About balance and falls prevention

Balance and falls prevention programs help you stay steady, move safely and manage everyday activities. They may be suitable if you have experienced falls or near falls, feel unsteady, rely on furniture for support or have become less confident moving around.

Balance involves more than standing still. Scott assesses how strength, movement, sensation and coordination affect tasks such as getting out of a chair, reaching, turning and walking. Your program starts at a level suited to your abilities and progresses as your control improves.

Available through our physiotherapy treatments, these programs focus on practical movement goals that matter to you.

What to expect at your appointment

Your balance and falls prevention appointment begins with a discussion about when you feel unsteady, any falls or near falls, and activities you would like to manage more confidently. Scott assesses relevant movements, which may include sitting, standing from a chair, reaching, turning and walking.

He explains the findings and guides you through exercises matched to your current ability. You can practise using appropriate support and ask questions about your technique, footwear and a suitable space for exercising at home.

Follow-up appointments check your response and help Scott adjust the challenge. Where reduced strength affects your stability, your program may also draw on functional strength rehabilitation.

Building confidence with Scott

Scott’s approach to balance and falls prevention connects exercise with the movements that matter to you. Your goals might include reaching into a cupboard, turning in a hallway or feeling steadier when visiting family.

He selects achievable challenges and explains how to practise with appropriate support. Progress depends on your movement control and ability to recover safely, rather than following a fixed timetable.

Balance and falls prevention also involves looking beyond exercise. Scott considers factors such as footwear, walking aids and home hazards, and recommends input from other health professionals where needed. For further information, read Healthdirect’s guide to falls prevention.

Frequently asked questions about balance and falls prevention

No. Near falls, feeling unsteady, holding onto furniture or avoiding activities because you fear falling are reasons to seek an assessment. Balance and falls prevention can begin before a serious fall occurs.

Scott discusses your falls history, confidence and daily activities. He assesses relevant areas such as strength, movement, sitting or standing balance, and walking. Your footwear, walking aids and surroundings may also be considered.

Balance and falls prevention can include people who use mobility equipment. Depending on your needs, practice may focus on sitting balance, reaching, transfers or supported walking. Scott assesses which activities and supports are appropriate for you.

Where appropriate, Scott teaches exercises you can practise between appointments and explains the support and supervision you need. Some activities require direct supervision. Your home practice should follow your individual instructions.

Scott recommends a practice schedule suited to your abilities, fatigue and supervision needs. Exercises progress when you demonstrate consistent control and safe recovery. There is no fixed timetable that suits everyone.

No program can eliminate every risk. Balance and falls prevention aims to improve relevant movement skills and address factors that contribute to falls. Medical conditions, medications, vision and environmental hazards may also require attention from other health professionals.
